Deputy Director‑General for Quality and Access at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Issahaque Munwaru, announced on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, 2 November, that teachers at Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School in Techiman will be reprimanded and stripped of their Masters on Duty duties following an assault captured on video.
Disciplinary measures
A committee set up by the school’s management recommended the sanctions. The teachers will also be referred for guidance and counselling, and the school will surcharge them for the medical expenses incurred by the affected students.
“The teachers would have to be reprimanded, and they are also to be taken off their positions,” Dr Munwaru said.
Preliminary findings indicate the teachers intervened after learning that some students were bullying peers and extorting money, using the metallic parts of belts to lash those who refused to pay.
“The law does not permit anything that will inflict pain on the child,” he added.
The incident is classified as professional misconduct under Part Three, Section Eight, Subsection A of the GES Code of Conduct, which forbids corporal punishment, painful postures, threats of harm or assault.
Ongoing investigation
The GES is cooperating with security agencies. The Bono East Regional Police have arrested the teachers, and the service will provide necessary information to support the police inquiry while its own disciplinary process proceeds.
“Any further misconduct along the same line will not receive the same level. It is going to be more punitive,” Dr Munwaru warned.
The service continues to educate staff on the Code of Conduct through orientation programmes, professional learning communities and continuous professional development sessions.
