Minister Samuel Nartey George directs GIFEC to load data directly onto devices at OMCP centres to curb diversion.

During a two‑day tour of One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) centres in Ghana's Volta Region, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation Samuel Nartey George instructed the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to load internet data directly onto learners' devices, rather than transferring it to site managers.

Reason for the change

The minister said the new approach is intended to reduce the risk of data being diverted from its intended purpose and to give participants immediate access to the resources needed for their training.

“Let’s load the devices,” he said.
“Let’s lead people, not into temptation.”

George added that the tour allowed him to hear directly from beneficiaries, assess what was working and identify challenges, including inconsistent internet availability and low connection speeds at some centres. He announced that the Ministry would coordinate with service providers to ensure that each centre receives internet speeds adequate for the programme.

Call for enrolment

The minister urged more Ghanaians – youth and older citizens alike – to enrol in the digital‑skills initiative, noting that the programme can improve employment and entrepreneurial prospects. Prospective learners are asked to register online or through designated learning centres.

GIFEC is expected to implement the directive promptly, with the Ministry monitoring compliance.
