Ghana’s Sports Ministry says it will not protect anyone implicated in the $623,000 World Cup visa scandal as CID probes the case.

On Saturday, October 10, Wonder Sitsofe Mandel, special aide to the Sports Minister, told JoyNews’ Newsfile that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will not protect any individual found to have committed wrongdoing in the ongoing investigation of the alleged World Cup visa scandal.

“Whenever there is wrongdoing, the law must take its course, and the ministry is not shielding anybody. If anyone collected money unlawfully, the ministry will present that applicant. If anyone abused the office process or benefited improperly, the law will work. The law must work,”

Mandel said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is already examining the matter, which involves roughly $623,000 in visa facilitation fees linked to Ghana’s arrangements for supporters and officials traveling to the tournament.

Government response

President John Mahama has suspended Yaw Ampofo Ankrah as Director General of the National Security Agency pending further investigations. The opposition Minority has called for the probe to be expanded to include additional officials it alleges were involved, and it is demanding the removal and possible prosecution of the Sports Minister and the Ghana Tourism Authority chief executive if culpability is established.

The CID investigation remains ongoing, and officials reiterated that any proven misconduct will be dealt with according to the law.
