During a two‑day working tour of the Volta Region, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Hon. Samuel Nartey George warned Ghanaians about individuals impersonating public officials to defraud citizens.
George made the remarks while visiting Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu, inspecting newly completed rural telephony sites and reviewing the One Million Coders Programme. He said a criminal network operating in Accra and the Volta Region was tracked by cybersecurity teams, leading to a joint operation that resulted in arrests in both locations.
“I remember very particularly. There was a gentleman who claimed to be me and defrauded people with respect to recruitment and took money from people,” George said.
Joint operation and arrests
The minister, who chairs the Regional Security Council, said the cybersecurity unit worked with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council to investigate the cell. “We did a joint operation. The RCC was very cooperative. We picked up some of them in Accra and picked some of the cells here in the Volta Region,” he added.
George thanked the Volta Regional Minister and the Coordinating Council for their cooperation in the fight against cybercrime and mobile‑money fraud.
He reiterated that safeguarding citizens from recruitment scams, mobile‑money fraud and impersonation of officials remains a priority for his ministry.
