Bekwai Municipal Hospital hosted Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku‑Adusei, on Monday, 12 October 2026, to review progress on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) medical school project situated at the facility.
The MP’s visit coincided with the hospital’s recent accreditation by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) as a secondary‑level health facility. Hospital management briefed him on the medical school initiative, which has received financial support from VALCO and is intended to transform the hospital into a teaching and training centre for future doctors, thereby expanding specialist‑consultant services for Bekwai and surrounding communities.
“Life is precious and good health is fundamental to everything we do. My commitment to supporting the welfare of my constituents transcends political differences,” MP Poku‑Adusei said.
Operational challenges and planned upgrades
Medical Superintendent Dr Serebour and the management team outlined several constraints, including limited capacity in the emergency unit, the absence of a dedicated isolation unit, insufficient accommodation for critical health personnel, the lack of an on‑site CT scan facility and delays in acquiring laboratory equipment. The team also highlighted the need for broader infrastructure expansion and expressed interest in public‑private partnerships to establish a CT scan and advanced diagnostic centre.
To improve patient flow, management presented plans for a queue‑management system aimed at reducing congestion and misunderstandings between patients and staff. The MP pledged to use his FM radio platform to provide free airtime for public education on hospital procedures, patient rights and health protocols.
Both parties agreed to maintain regular engagement as the hospital works toward becoming a centre of excellence in the Ashanti Region.
