Ghanaian rapper Teephlow outlined his criteria for selecting the country’s top rappers during a recent interview on Joy Prime.
He said his choices are driven primarily by “the pen”, emphasizing a rapper’s ability to write, construct lyrics and deliver meaningful verses.
Artists named
Teephlow highlighted creatives from the Skillions Record label, where he was groomed, treating the signees as a single entry rather than naming individual members. He also mentioned Joey B and E.L as notable examples.
Among the older‑generation artists, he listed Sarkodie, M.anifest and Yaa Pono, noting their role in making rap attractive to newer musicians.
The veteran rappers Okyeame Kwame and Obrafour were also included, with Teephlow insisting that omitting either would be unfair given their contributions to the development of Ghanaian rap.
“the pen”
When asked to limit his list to five names, Teephlow maintained that both Okyeame Kwame and Obrafour deserved recognition, reflecting his appreciation for technical ability and the lasting influence of artists who shaped the genre rather than popularity alone.
The interview underscores Teephlow’s respect for lyrical craftsmanship across generations of Ghanaian hip‑hop.
