UTAG-UG warns it will halt teaching at University of Ghana on Oct 19 if the 2026 research allowance remains unpaid.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) branch at the University of Ghana has issued a notice stating it will suspend teaching and related services from Monday, 19 October 2026, unless the government settles the outstanding 2026 Book and Research Allowance.

The notice, dated 9 October 2026 and addressed to the National Labour Commission, cites persistent delays that breach a 2020 Memorandum of Agreement which obliges the government to pay the allowance by the end of August each year.

"Given the current circumstances, if by Friday 16th October 2026 these monies are not paid, members of UTAG-UG will withdraw all teaching and related services beginning Monday 19th of October 2026," the notice reads.

The letter, signed by UTAG-UG president Dr Jerry Joe Harrison and secretary Godfred Bright Hagan, was also sent to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the ministries of Employment and Labour Relations, Finance and Education, the Director of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the national president of UTAG.

Potential impact

Should the deadline pass without payment, the withdrawal could disrupt lectures, seminars and other academic activities at the University of Ghana.
