The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is developing a draft National Animal Welfare Policy aimed at regulating the treatment of animals in tourism and hospitality facilities and encouraging responsible sourcing of animal products.
Policy requirements
According to the draft, facilities covered by the policy would be required to adopt and annually review institutional animal welfare and responsible sourcing policies, appoint dedicated Animal Welfare Officers, and ensure veterinary oversight for any animals under their care.
"Under the draft policy, covered facilities would be required to adopt and annually review institutional animal welfare and responsible sourcing policies, appoint Animal Welfare Officers and provide veterinary oversight for animals under their care," said Alexander Nketla, Director of Product Development & Investment at the GTA.
The initiative is presented as part of the GTA’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment to promote responsible and sustainable tourism. The authority indicated that the policy is still in draft form and will be refined before any formal adoption.
