Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using the government’s evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa as a political tool.
Speaking on Adom FM’s programme Dwaso Nsem, Jibril described the NPP’s “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika” demonstration as “cheap politics”, noting that investigations into the evacuation arrangements had already been launched.
NDC’s view on accountability
He said the protest was unnecessary because the government had begun addressing the issues raised about the evacuation. Jibril questioned the NPP’s commitment to accountability, referencing the party’s earlier resistance when the NDC called for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori‑Atta to return to Ghana to answer questions about his tenure.
“When we called for Ken Ofori‑Atta to return to Ghana, the NPP resisted. They are now demanding accountability, but their actions do not reflect that commitment,” Jibril said.
He added that if the NPP were genuinely interested in protecting the public purse, Ofori‑Atta should have returned by now.
Jibril affirmed that the NDC was not opposed to accountability, stating that the government had started working on the concerns surrounding the evacuation, making the demonstration “unnecessary”.
NPP demonstration
The NPP organised the “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika” protest to demand transparency and accountability over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. The demonstration sparked controversy after allegations emerged of disrespectful conduct during the presentation of the demonstrators’ petition to officials of the Presidency.
Both parties remain at odds as the issue continues to be examined by authorities.
