President John Dramani Mahama suspended National Sports Authority Director‑General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah on Thursday, 1 October, after allegations that he facilitated visa applications for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in exchange for fees.
The controversy centres on reports that about US$623,000 was received from prospective travellers, with roughly 90 individuals paying between $10,000 and $15,000 each, yet only five obtained visas.
Ankrah’s response
Speaking at Ghana’s Beach Soccer AFCON qualifier against Nigeria, Ankrah denied wrongdoing.
"I’m 200% confident that I’ll be exonerated," he said. "People should be very cautious about what they put out there that they cannot verify… I’m very happy that so far the investigations have gone very smoothly, and we’re just waiting for the final report to be released."
Following the suspension, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed acting Director‑General of the NSA.
Authorities have not released a final findings report, and investigations remain ongoing.
