President Mahama commends Roads Minister Kwame Agbodza for keeping contractors on track and calls for mining firms to partner on infrastructure.

On Friday, 9 October, President John Dramani Mahama inspected the Ntotroso Bridge in Ghana’s Ahafo Region as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour. He used the occasion to commend Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza for ensuring that contractors adhere to the timelines set for the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

“Let me commend the Roads Minister for the hard work you are doing. You are keeping all the contractors on their toes, and it is making the programme we launched under the Big Push move at the pace that we expect,” Mahama said.

The president noted that contracts awarded under the programme by the end of 2025 are expected to be completed by the end of 2027, allowing Ghanaians to benefit from the infrastructure investments.

“I am sure by the time we get to the end of 2027, most of the contracts we awarded end of 2025 would have been completed, and Ghanaians will see the benefit of the Big Push programme,” he added.

Call for private‑sector collaboration

Mahama also praised mining giant Newmont for its cooperation with the government on infrastructure projects and urged other large mining and corporate entities to adopt similar arrangements. He suggested that joint financing, with costs shared equally between the state and private firms, alongside corporate‑social‑responsibility initiatives, could mobilise additional resources and deliver tangible benefits to host communities.

“These are the kinds of collaborations we want to see. All these big mining companies, big corporate interest, we want that you partner with government,” he said.

The president emphasized that the economic activity generated by major companies should contribute to improving living standards in the areas where they operate, easing pressure on public finances and supporting local development.
