Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams defended payments made to the Black Stars and associated officials during Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, telling listeners on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme.
Payment details
Adams said each player received a cash award of $100,000. Members of the team’s management committee and Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku were each paid $50,000. GFA general secretary Prosper Harrison Addo received $20,000, while security personnel attached to the squad were paid $10,000 each. He added that the sums also covered other officials who travelled with the team to North America.
Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance ended in the Round of 32 after the Black Stars recorded one win, one draw and two defeats. The tournament was also clouded by a visa‑related controversy that resulted in the suspension of National Sports Authority director‑general Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Following the World Cup, the team has turned its attention to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, to be hosted in East Africa. After losing to Ivory Coast and The Gambia in the opening qualifying matches, the Black Stars will seek to revive their campaign with a double‑header against Somalia at Accra Sports Stadium next month. An interim technical team is expected to oversee the side after the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz.
